The Triangle
Have you ever heard an album and thought, “why is that so good?” Have you ever wanted to build the perfect playlist for your best bud or lover? Have you ever listened to a particularly good bop and wondered…”what is that song about?”
Boy-oh-boy, do I have The TriangleTM for you.
The concept behind The TriangleTM is simple – it is a visual depiction of the full range of human emotions that could possibly be expressed through music. Broadly speaking, there are three categories: I wanted it, I got it, I don’t want it now. These are simplified as $$$, Drugs, and a Broken Heart at the big corners of The TriangleTM. The smaller, middle triangle is formed by understanding the mid-points between these extremes. For example, the mid-point between Drugs and a Broken Heart is Withdrawal. These concepts are further refined by identifying the mid-points between these states of being – the mid-point between Drugs and Withdrawal is Bankruptcy. Tessellations of these little triangles form Vibe Corridors, like the Broken Heart-$$$ corridor, or the Lonely Boy-Quivering corridor. Furthermore, each inner triangle has its own identity. The Broken Heart-Straight Up Anguish-Lonely Boy triangle is Despair. The Nostalgia-PARTY!-Dirty Boy triangle (and coincidentally, The TriangleTM at its center) is Love.
By listening to the lyrics and feeling The Vibe of a song, that song can be “triangulated” and its meaning understood. Whole albums can be triangulated and the overall vibe of the work deduced. Clusters of songs can be triangulated to build out a playlist that perfectly encapsulates any mood, vibe, or scenario imaginable. It’s a very exciting tool.
